To think of all the big and important learning topics we covered that morning – outside in a puddle. It never ceases to amaze me how much learning comes from exploring through play. ![]() And as it turns out, the paper fans would actually float for awhile as well! The thicker, smaller boats held up much better to the water. With just the right amount of pressure, it turns out that the boats could be lead and moved with a stick itself. It was a careful balance, the boys discovered, because bigger waves moved the boats faster, but too big of waves sent the boats sinking. Pretty soon, sticks got to splashing, waves got to forming, and those boats got to moving. Once we got ourselves outside and in the puddle we quickly realized the paper fans did not really work to move the boats along. He could master that back and forth folding all on his own in just a few moments. Since we were bringing the boats outside to float, I thought we could make some paper fans to help move them across the puddle. I have really been nurturing this interest – plus paper crafts for kids are just so simple to prepare.īen of course wants to be a part of the origami crafting epidemic but at four, it is tricky for him to do on his own. It requires concentration and attention to details, sequential steps, learning about symmetry and angles, and lots of rather big math concepts too. Origami is such a great craft for my Sam. We all are in need of that warm sun and that fresh air. Since it is officially spring we take every chance we can get to bring our learning outside. We decided to experiment to see which would hold up best outside. The first was a bit of a bigger and thinner boat and the second had more folds and was a thicker and smaller boat (you can watch that Youtube tutorial here) We found two different Youtube tutorials for making origami boats which Sammy could make all on his own. One hat turns into many, which turn into planes, frogs, and boats too. It turns out origami is a rather addictive type of paper craft for kids. Then pull both center lines in the opposite direction so you will have diamond shape paper. Put your thumb on the opening right in the centre by the folded line. Fold the lower side upward, align it with the top, and do the same for the opposite side. Now the paper resembles a diamond shape folded paper. Pull both corners in the opposite direction. Next, fold it again in half, then open it up.įold two corners on the top to the middle so both corners will meet up in the center along the folded line and resemble a triangle.įold up both rectangle shapes under the triangle. First, fold the paper half downward or lengthwise. ![]() If you use a square shape like the paper specifically for origami, cut it into a rectangle for this project. You can use stickers, pencil colour, or marker to add decoration or doodles. The colourful crafting paper is also fantastic for this project. The only material you need to make a paper boat is print-size A4 paper. ![]() It is fun to make paper boats with various paper colours, and you can make them in different sizes too. This paper boat is the exact one I used to make and play with when I was little. All you need to do is fold some paper a few times, add a few decorations or doodles you like, and your paper boat is ready in no time.
